Keystone Golden Retriever Rescue Puppy Mill Information

Pennsylvania, "The Puppy-Mill Capital of the East Coast"
Puppy-mills...what they are and what they do

Many people are aware of puppy-mills or are familiar with the phrase, but few really know the horrors within these places. Puppy-mills are canine factories that mass produce puppies for sale to pet stores throughout the country or to individuals through newspaper ads or internet websites.

Pennsylvania, known as "The Puppy-mill Capital of the East Coast," is home to hundreds upon hundreds of puppy-mills. It is estimated that there are over 2,000 mills existing all over this state. The largest number being located in Lancaster County, but they are moving steadily into other areas.

Puppy-mills began in Pennsylvania in the early 1980's when a broker from the Midwest came to promote the breeding and selling of purebred dogs as a means to "supplement" and "increase" profits for farmers. This proved to be a disaster for our beloved canines. Breeding was put into the hands of people with no knowledge, no compassion or concern for the lives of our companion animals. Dogs are living in filthy conditions. Sick and injured dogs receive no veterinary care. Diseased puppies, often with genetic defects, are being sold to unsuspecting buyers. Consumers are spending thousands of dollars in veterinary expenses for these puppies. Often their beloved puppy dies regardless of their care.

The Bureau of Dog Law in Harrisburg, which falls under the Department of Agriculture, is the agency charged with licensing these facilities, regulating the conditions of kennels and providing protection for the dogs. State officials and agencies are betraying the dogs they are suppose to be protecting and the consumers that purchase these puppies.

If you have purchased a sick puppy that originated in Pennsylvania and you now suspect that it came from a puppy-mill, please download this Word document to file a complaint.

You can also fill out and submit the complaint form online.

Morgan (Yellow Labrador Retriever Puppy)
11/01/04 - 02/03/05

Laid to rest due to DISTEMPER

Morgan's life was cut short due to distemper. She died when she was 3 months old, never having the opportunity to experience the life of anormal, happy puppy. For 5 weeks Morgan'sfamily loved her and tried everything possible to save her. Canine distemper is a highly contagious incurable disease, causing vomiting, seizures, paralysis and death.

She was purchased from a Pennsylvania puppy mill. This mill is still operating and selling sick puppies.
